1997 Altima passes emissions, but fails overall smog.

My 1997 Altima with 120k passes emissions, but fails overall smog inspection because "MIL/Check Engine Light" results in "Fail".

The bulb is fine, as it illuminates, then promptly discharges upon starting.

Two smog guys have said all that's needed is to run the car @ freeway speed for about 30 miles, which I've done five times over, to no avail.

What else can be done to rectify "MIL/Check Engine Light" failure.

You need to plug in a scanner to the OBD II port under the dash. If the check engine light is not on, more than likely not all systems are "ready" for testing. There are 6-8 systems which are monitored and must be ready for testing. The scanner will indicate readiness, and which monitors are not.
