'88 900S center vent air is cold

Been ignoring this issue for a while but it's been annoying in the cold weather. The center dash vent always vents cold air even with the heat on, this is not normal is it? Should I be looking for a cracked vacuum hose behind the dash or is there something else that can cause it?

That problem is very expensive to fix. You should sell that car to me right now!! :-)

Seriously, is this your first Classic 900? That is one of the great features of the Classic 900. You can close the center vent if you don't want the cold air. However, you can use the other vents to keep you feet and body warm - and have cold air directed to your face to help keep you alert. Does this car have a working AC system? If so, you would have noticed this is the primary vent for the AC. Again cool air can be directed to your face to help keep you alert. I miss this feature as well as the big front windshield when I drive other cars . . .

This is a really good feature. I miss it since I got my 9000.

It really does help keep you alert when you're tired but you have to have the heat on to keep you from being frozen.

I have no idea why it's been discontinued.

Dang, I know I can close the center vent, but I like to have a vent on each side of the steering wheel blowing on my hands to warm them up in the morning, oh well. Yes it has AC but it doesn't work, that's still on the list.

I still don't consider it a good feature. It would be if it could be turned to warm air, but freezing cold air blowing in in the winter is *not* something I find pleasant.

I agree. This time of year I always have a cold right hand. Left side is OK as I can direct the warm air flow to my left hand on the steering wheel.

Absolutely. It's a design feature that I sorely miss with my 9-5. Didn't know how much I missed it until I got back into a c900. The idea is, cold air in our face keeps you not drowsy. Toasty warm with cool air in the face works very well, and I wish I had a way to do it with the 9-5.

Four options

  1. As stated before - you can close the vent
  2. Re-direct the vent
  3. Wear gloves (a good one since the steering wheel is not heated)
  4. All of the above

Guess what? My 528 has it! In fact, you can choose between cold and warm air on the centre vent (independant of the rest of the temperature controls). I choose cold, because like you I like the combination of cold air in the face + warm surroundings.

(grmpf...)

But we never disagreed on the design and engineering of those cars, it was the attitude of the people that drive them that give the brand a bad name.

As before, I know exactly what you're saying.

I don't drive when I'm drowsy unless I absolutely have to, and if I do I just crack the window for some cold air.

Or just drive the Volvo on cold mornings and have nice warm air blowing on both hands...

I love the C900, I really do, but this "feature" has to be the most silly design decision on that car, all they'd have had to do was provide a warm vent on the passenger side of the steering wheel and I'd be happy, one more vacuum flap and a bit of ducting is all it would take to be able to choose.

Does anyone know how the 240 produces heat so quickly? It is great, but the Volvo is rear wheel drive. The C900 does much better on snow and ice.

James,

Look at the heater distribution diagram. There are 2 heat selections (on my '91 at least). The one which is just a down arrow is heat only and no center cold bypass. The one with the down arrow with the small block above it is cold air in the center vent. This is in the owner's manual, though they may have changed this around over the years.

And here, I thought my issue was solved!!!

I've got a 1998 9000CSE. It blows cold air (even in winter), unless you set the temp to HI..... Then, you get way to warm...

I noticed that the cabin air sensor fan is rubbing and will be repl it...

Any other ideas???
