91 900S Alternator

Alternator bounces up and down like crazy. Checked bolts. They are tight as hell. Looked in the Bentley service manual. Nothing mentioned in regards to rubber mounts. Went perusing Saab parts web sights. Found out that 2 rubber bushings are used on the alternator mounting bolt.

Anyone else have this problem with bushings failing and the alternator shaking like crazy ?

Looks like it's going to be a pain to replace with the oil filter housing having to come off in order to make room to work.

Any comments ?

They last about 10 years or so before needing replacing. Also replace the bushings on the adjustment arm. Replacement requires removal of the alternator and does not require removal of the oil filter housing. Look on Saabnet and townsendimports for detailed description of the process.

jon banquer ( snipped-for-privacy@yahoo.com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

It's a pain in the arse.

We had a cracked bottom mount, so the alternator was wobbling. The one that's gone in has bushes that are fairly mediocre, but will live for the purposes we have for the car (see sig - anybody in the UK see yesterday's Sunday Times? That'll be us in a week and a half!)

To remove it (UK RHD car), you really need to remove the water hoses above the alternator. Undo the adjustment arm bolt, and remove. You can then take the belts off, and flop the alternator down to do the top and front allen bolts. Beware, they'll be bloody tight and probably corroded in. Use a good allen key.

When they're done, you can tip the alternator to the block and get in underneath it for the third bolt. There's no point in removing the hinge bolt, because it won't come out with the alternator in the car...

Don't forget to disconnect the battery before you start.
