Engine temperature gauge - 1990 Saab 9000S

Hi,

I just got a 1990 Saab 9000S 16V 2.3 L. Today there was a leak today because of a hole on a radiator hose. So I cut a bit of it and reattached the hose temporarily until I replace the hose tomorrow. But now my engine temperature gauge sits at low and doesn't even move a bit. I checked and the fan kicks in after a while. So what cold be the problem?

I don't have a manual of the car so I don't know where the temperature sensors are (thinking may be I accidentally unplugged smth, although I don't think so)

I would really appreciate any help. I am a very very beginner on car stuff though.

thanks

You've leaked enough coolant for the level to be below the temp sensor. So the sensor is dry. Top up with coolant.

Thanks Grunff,

I filled the container after the leak. Still the gauge sits on low. Any other possibilities? And do you have an idea where the sensor might be lcoated?

thanks

Does the needle sit right at the bottom, like it does with the ignition turned off? If so, it's more likely that the wire has come off the sensor. The sensor is located near the thermostat housing IIRC.

Yes, it sits right at the bottom like it does with the ignition turned off. It moves just a tiny bit when I turn the engine on and goes back to the bottom and after that it doesn't move at all.

I'll check the wire today. Hopefully that's the problem.

Thanks for the help.

If that's the case, then a wire is disconnected somewhere.

Good plan.

No problem.
