AEM Short RAM Air Intake installed... review...

Just installed the AEM Short RAM Air Intake on my 1991 Sl2. Engine has about

40,000 miles on it. Gives the engine a nice "biting" sound, especially at higher RPMs... performance difference seems to be about 4-5 HP... it's almost like there was an imaginary AC on in my car and it was switched off. Power increase is most noticeable around the 40-80 MPH and top end speed has gone up a few MPH as well. :) Pretty good for a bolt on modification, in my humble opinion, and the red color I got looks very nice. Installation took about an hour, but it would have taken only half an hour if not for the fact that I rounded off one of the rusted screws for the airbox and had to fight with it. Think I'll get the Accel coil packs with the Nology Hot Wires and Beru Silverstone Plugs next, then completely overhaul the etire exhaust system, putchase a fuel pressure regulator, and performance throttle body..

Only 40K on a SL1? Wow, even my 94 SC2 had 42K+ when I traded it in after 4 years in 98 for my 98 SL2. Anyway, good to hear that the intake is working good. As far as the wires, someone a while back......I think it was Lane.......posted some interesting info about plug wires. After reading it I ended up going with more of a "generic" SPS branded wire. I was going to spend a little more and do the magnecor's but I was buying parts from the local parts dept which happened to be carrying some of the SPS items and the only Magnecor's they had weren't for my car. Anyway, the Accel coil packs seem good though, I'm running them, though the only reason I really considered them at the time was they were the same price as stock and my stock ones were shot.

Unless you've done radical work on the engine, I have to agree with Bandit. If you need coils the Accels are close enough in price to go with them. Redoing the exhaust with a free-er flowing system is OK. The expensive plugs and plug wires aren't worth what they cost.

I admit to having little knowledge about the regulator and TB, but from Bandit's prior postings I'd take his word on them.

Yeah I have to agree too on the TB, from what I've been reading it's not really useful though it might be I guess if you're throwing a turbo kit on there. On the Accel coils, the only reason they're on mine is because I needed new ones anyway and they were the same price so I figured why not. I don't know what Bandit has posted on fuel regulators but my guess from recent forum readings at different Saturn performance sites is that it's not needed unless you're pushing stuff like ported heads and intakes and turbos.

Joe C. had a pic on his site with a couple of carbs bolted on a Sat engine - looked like the old side-draft (is that the right term?) Weber's of yesteryear...
