South Bend may seek environmental assessment grant for Chippewa Ave. land Tribune Staff Report

SOUTH BEND -- South Bend may seek a state grant to assess environmental remediation of a former industrial site on the city's southwest side.

The Hanover Property, 731 W. Chippewa Ave., is a triangular parcel west of the railroad tracks, and north of Chippewa and the city's south well field. It formerly served as a engine manufacturing and military truck assembly plant.

The city may apply for a $92,386 state grant to study the land for remediation and reuse. The South Bend Common Council will be asked Jan. 28 to authorize the grant request on the city's behalf.

The property is now used for vehicle maintenance, truck parking and warehousing. The property owner, Indiana Land Trust GRN of Mishawaka, hopes to invest $1.5 million to start green manufacturing facilities that will employ 12 workers, according to the city.

Once part of the former AM General property, the 15 acres of land was part of a larger 89-acre site developed by the Studebaker Corp. in

1941 to make World War II-era B-17 bomber engines and military off- terrain vehicles.

Once, about the latter end of September, the last year, when she and some others of the children were in a room by themselves, husking Indian corn, the child, after a while, came out and sat by the fire. Her mother took notice that she appeared with a more than ordinary serious and pensive countenance; but at last she broke silence, and said, I have been talking to Nabby and Eunice. Her mother asked her what she had said to them. Why, said she, I told them they must pray, and prepare to die; that they had but a little while to live in this world, and they must be always ready. When Nabby came out, her mother asked her, whether she had said that to them. Yes, said she, She said that, and a great deal more. At other times, the child took opportunities to talk to the other children about th
