'01 Forester - Squeaky Brakes

Lately, my 2001 Forester's brakes have started squeaking. (It has the original brakes and is at approximately 48,000 miles). When the car's cold, they don't seem to squeak. But after 10 minutes or so, after numerous stops, the squeaking begins. The performance of the brakes seems fine.

I'm pretty light on the brake pedal, so I don't think that the pads are worn out yet. I plan to have the brakes checked out by a mechanic though, but I'm looking for some ideas of what the problem might before I go, so I can speak intelligently about it with him.

Googling this newsgroup indicated that squeaky brakes seem to be a common problem with the Forester. Has there ever been a definitive solution to this?

Thanks!

Could be that the brake pads are glazed do to frequent very light applications. You might try several stops from 60 to 20 miles per hours while NOT keeping the brakes on between runs for cooling. For the 60-20 mph stops use forceful braking but, not into the ABS. Let us know if that helps as it did on mine. ed "BRH @comcast.net>"
