97 astro windshield sprayer squirter thing

my front windshield washer squirters dont work on my new/used 97 astro. is this an easy fix? is there a simple motor or relay or something that i need to replace?

i am semi-handy around a car, and would like to do this myself if possible. what can you all tell me about this repair?

thanks.

Usually an easy fix. Sometimes the problem is a hose that has cracked or has become disconnected from the system. Start by locating your washer reservoir and make sure your hoses are in good shape and connected.

Sometimes the nozzles get stopped up or are pointed the wrong way. Usually they can be opened up, if you can get to them easily enough, with a fine piece of wire or a needle.

Also check to see if the washer pump is working. If not, be sure there is not a fuse blown. If the little pump unit is trashed, you can buy replacements.

where is the washer pump located? is it the same thing as the wiper motor?

It is 'usually' on the bottom of the place you put the fluid in....

They sell inline replacements that go on in a couple minutes if the motor is indeed fried.

Just trace the hoses back from the squirt nozzles and you'll find the pump. GM in that era usually had a pump that is held into the bottom of the plastic fluid tank by a rubber grommet.

As others have mentioned, make sure first that it's the pump rather than a clogged nozzle, or a hose that has come off and is dutifully squirting into some random place under the hood, or the electricity supply to the pump motor.

The pump is an easy repair (depending on how hard it is to access that part of the tank on your model and year). All the auto parts stores would have replacements; it's a common generic part (and a fairly fallible one, in my experience).

Note that the instructions that come with the new pump may tell you how to prime it. Running dry for very long isn't good for them.

If the pump has to come out, you can also use the garden hose to chase out whatever dirt and algae are sitting in the reservoir.

Cheers,

when i hit the wiper sprayer trigger, there is no noise coming from where the sprayer motor is. does that mean the motor is probably fried?

The motor could be defective, the electrical connection could be bad, or there could be a fuse problem. If it isn't pumping you just need to find out which of the three applies.

You can test electrical circuits of this type with a very very cheap test lamp. If no voltage, look for a fuse or wiring problem. If you have voltage but no pumping, it is probably the pump mechanism.
