American Gas Usage?

Hi all....

Does anyone here have an idea of how much of america's oil consumption is devoted to PERSONAL transportation? Obviously a good bit of it is devoted to heating, manufacturing, electricity production, trains, planes and transportation by road of business goods and services.....

So, what fraction (roughly) is used to fuel our personal autos?

And a second related question....what percentage of american cars are of the SUV/gas guzzler category vs the mid sized/compact fuel efficient model?

take care

Well, I for one drive a compact car that gets a good 15 miles per gallon. Maybe as high as 18 in highway driving.

From a compact car? Sheesh, my '93 Tempo got around 18 city, 23-25 highway.

My buddies Expedition gets a whopping 13MPG all around.

Tune that sucker up! My 95 Taurus station wagon does about 5 mpg better than that on both counts.

And if I'm paying attention my 2001 Impala does too.

Come to think of it, my brother in law's new Suburban gets 18mpg on the highway. [real life-- I don't know what it's rated for- a 2003 loaded]

Crap man, my old Jeep CJ7 with the aerodynamics of a brick and turning

33" mud tires gets a sweet 19 US mpg or 11L/ 100 km with a 4.2 L carburetor engine.

My Cherokee gets closer to 24 mpg if run easy. Though fully loaded with

4 adults and camping gear running at 70 mph or 110 kph drops the mileage down to 20 mpg or a little better than 11L/ 100 km with a 4.0 MPFI engine.
