LOL! I think that was his problem, his brain wasn't connected to his hands. He's damn lucky if an alternator was the only thing he toasted.

a $60 alternator repair probably saved him $400-1000 elsewhere. Once the alternator diodes went into conduction, there was no way the system would go more negative than their voltage drop of 0.7 volts or so until they blew or the fusable link opened.

Think ECU if you want to think expensive. Add every single electronic module in the car's electrical system if you really want to sweat.
