Defensive Driving and Emergency Maneuvers

Awhile the above post is well meaning, the fact of the situation is that it is one thing to read something, it is another thing to actually do it.

I believe that everyone operating a motor vehicle needs to go back to the classroom every few years. There are defensive driving courses but now even those are taught and tests given online. We all need to see what our vehicles will do and perform under stressful conditions.

There should be a test track in every locality with controlled driving conditions to educate the driving public in driving in hazardous conditions. A soap pad for driving in slick circumstances, a rapid lane-change area,and more advanced courses for those who want to learn more.

Of course, nobody wants to do it until he or she gets into that situation.

Situational awareness is key to solve many of these situations.

I had to do the fast lane change once. I was about to go through a green light on a highway around 60mph in an 85 Toyota Camry and for whatever reason the driver of a SUV goosed his vehicle through the red and then stopped blocking my lane, there was no time for me to stop or brake, and I was past him by the time I'd finished the "OH S*IT" prayer. All I could do was the fast lane change and hope there wasn't an oncoming car or hit him and it looked like a sure wreck about to happen, I didn't think my car or the tires on my car could do it. But they did. The amount of zig has to be right or you go off the road on the other side, and the zag or recovery is as important or you just wreck in the ditch on the other side of the road or on down the road a ways. I've had many cars that wouldn't have made that cut, probably most of them but the old Toyota did although it wasn't that old at the time. Finally, white cars are safer, this I know.

You always have to keep an eagle eye on the dummy drivers out there! Yesterday, when I was driving along on the highway, a dummy driver coming around behind my van, he cut in real sharp between a car in the left lane of the four lane highway and my van, that dummy a..hole almost sideswiped my van.

Always keep an eye on the vehicles coming in the opposite direction towards you, if you see an oncoming vehicle (front wheels) cutting to the left toward you,,, watch out! cuhulin
