Formula 1 fuel flow meter hoohah kerfuffle

Why do they need this fuel monitor (which is claimed to be fault-prone)? The cars have a standard ECU. Tons of data is broadcast back, inlcuding injector pulse width. If you also know the pressure, you could work out the flow for a given model injector. As the engines are replaced within the season, wear of injectors would not be an issue.

Because then people would fiddle with the pressure in order to game the system.

The whole point of the fuel flow meter is that it's a more or less sealed box that the teams can't readily tamper with.

It's not just a matter of getting good fuel flow information, it's a matter of getting good fuel flow information from people in whose best interest it is to give you false information.
