Pulling Chrysler Tranny Codes

Can any of you professionals tell me which scanners, with which cartridges, it would take to pull the A-604 tranny trouble codes from a 1991 Plymouth Grand Voyager? It appears that only a pro level scanner such as the Snap-On MT 2500 or the OTC monitor 4000 Enhanced will do it, but with what cartridges/cables? Thanks.

Don't own a 4000 Enhanced but with the Snap-On you'd need the "Domestic Primary" cartridge current to the vehicle model year (1991) and the "Chry-2" (CCD bus) cable adaptor. The "Transmission Troubleshooter" cartridge might prove to be a handy option but wouldn't be an absolute necessity to what you want to do.

The CCD bus connector is under the dashboard, near the fues box access (many pivot down or are held by velcro).

IIRC, Dan Stern has a 4000 Enhanced, maybe he'll chime in on which cables are needed for that unit.

cartridges,

You don't need an OTC 4000 Enhanced, a plain OTC 4000E will do it. They are going really cheap on Ebay right now. The 4000 Enhanced will do pre 1996 and post

1996 (OBD-II) the 4000E non-enhanced will only do pre 1996. Be careful if you buy them off Ebay, sellers frequently mistitle the items, and I've seen plain 4000E's referred to as 4000 Enhanced's in an effort to drive up the cost. The units use a different button pattern so they are easy to tell apart if there's a picture.

Then you need a Chrysler CCD adapter and you need the appropriate cartridge. Best is to get a Pathfinder 1996 or 1995 cartridge if your going for a plain

4000E. If you spend the extra for a 4000 Enhanced then you can get any cartridge that will fit it.

Here's some pics for you:

Based on current pricing the 4000E listed above will go for $150 or under.
