Erasing OBDII Codes (Camry 2005)

In my OBDII reader user manual there is a following info:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------=

-------------------------

5.2 Erasing Codes CAUTION: Erasing the Diagnostic Trouble Codes may allow the scan tool to delete not only the codes from the vehicle=92s on-board computer, but also =93Freeze Frame=94 data and manufacturer specific enhanced data. Further, the I/M Readiness Monitor Status for all vehicle monitors is reset to Not Ready or Not Complete status. Do not erase the codes before the system has been checked completely by a technician.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------=

--------------------------- I would need a "translation" of the above info, and some recommendations for Camry. Is there any issue with deleting codes? I am assuming, if the issue has not been corrected after the codes have been reset, they would come back again.

Thanks in advance.

Doesn't simply disconnecting the battery erase the codes? Leave the battery disconnected... oh, 30 minutes or so... then re-connect?

It's been awhile, and I think this erased the Check Engine Light for me when I had my problems, but I'm not certain if this also erases the codes stored... I had an oxygen sensor failure on the '99 Camry. Disconnected the battery, swapped the oxygen sensor with a new one, no more Check Engine Light, but I didn't bother to see if the codes were still there...

No problem deleting codes. As long as you wrote them down for reference. Just disconnect the battery or pull the EFI fuse for a minute should do it.

Unless you need to use them, it's OK just to clear them. The I/M monitors will come back after some drive cycles, just mean that the corresponding diagnostics program completed.
