The special coating offered is likely the new DuPont SupraShield. The DuPont web site states that it is a premium automotive clearcoat which resists scratches, mars and environmental damage which come from daily use, such as car washes and chemicals in the environment. SupraShield protects and extends the life of the high gloss finish.

Suprashield is a clear coat, not a wax-type add-on. The body shop or assembly plant sprays clear coat over the paint as part of the painting process.
$500 for maybe a quickie wax or maybe nothing is simple gouging. Ken
