Truck recommendation

Hi:

Looking for some advice. I have owned several toyotas over the years, and I just sold my 99 4-runner to a friend. I'm attempting to locate a mid to late 90's or so 2wd pickup. Mostly to use just for around town, occasional trips to the dump and towing a small boat short distances. Any years or features to avoid?

TIA,

Scott in WI

I recommend 98 or 99 prerunner. Look of a 4x4 but 2wd insurance and Toyota dependability. I have one of the 98's and a 2000 both excelent trucks. Scott

Go see an engine reconditioning workshop which specialises in Toyotas. They see all the shortcomings in the most expensive parts of trucks. I wish I had made a few such calls before buying my 1990 Hilux d/cab 4WD. Turns out that the Toyota 3L diesel engines (2.8 litre, naturally aspirated) have 'soft' crank shafts and if oil levels in the barely adequate sump drop below full for long enough, the #4 bearing will fail. Guess what? My #4 bearing died. All shops I rang for fix-it quotes said the same thing... "Don't tell me... It's your #4 bearing!"
