Fuel Pump Question

Are there different push rod lengths for fuel pumps? And did any engine, Type I, II, III or IV roll down the road (or power a Zamboni, run a thresher, or other industrial use) with a fuel pump on the SIDE of the case, below the distributor? Some airplane conversions have it, and there's a guy in Australia pulling his hair out trying to source a replacement pump.

Answer here, there, or directly to him if you've got any insight. Particularly manual citations and part numbers.

Tome Willson's overhaul manual, which has usually reliable information on parts evolutions and interchanges, is silent on this one.

Yes, two. Bentley has detailed specs.

Yes, early beetle engines were like this. And I think Porsche 356.

Go electric. And double it for aviation safety reasons. Very easy.

Yes. At least three that I know of for upright engines, plus replacements that are 1mm longer for at least two of them.

Zamboni,

Yes again. The side-mounted fuel pump was standard for vehicle engines up thru 1959 or '60 and was also fitted to the early Porsche crankcase. The side mounted pump was also used on VW industrial engines of that era and continues in use today on some German-built flying VW's because they like the lower profile.

Tony has been 'pulling his hair out' over that particular problem for at least FIVE YEARS (see the archives of the AirVW Group). Several people have provided him with the information he requested yet he continues to bemoan his fate. He's either remarkably forgetful or, more likely, he's waiting for someone to take pity on him and send him some free parts, including the phenolic insulator that appears to be missing (and why he keeps insisting the CORRECT push-rod is too short). (The insulator for the side-mounted pump is about an inch thick.)

The last time I checked (about five years ago :-) the side-mounted pump, insulator and push-rod(s) were available from Volkswagen's Industrial Engine Division. Unfortunately, they were not free and Tony was apparently unwilling to cough-up the lolly since he's still posting the same bullshit.
