overcharge attempt by dealer

Hi All

I would like to take your opinion on next subject. Recently my s70 could not get on. I got a bust and drove to dealler. Dealler charged me $57 for diagnostic and gave me estimate for $1145 for change of: alternator, positive power cable, terminals.

I took car back and brought it to my mechanic. He diagnosed that problem is bad battery which he changed.

Do you see here any wrong intend from dealler? I understand that dealler cares to repair your car ultimately best way and sure expensive. But here I see either attempt for overcharge or something which is at least against my interests.

At the end, I paid money for diagnostic and deserve accurate information.

Thank you for any of your input.

Dealers are in it for the money, period.

Yeah, he tried to rip you off.

Maybe the alternator is OK, which compounds the offense.

But replacing a shot alternator requires little labor, less skill, and should cost a small fraction of what the dealer charged.

C'mon, open up a world of new possibilities and pick up a DIY car repair manual, some tools, and tackle your car repair yourself.

It is eminently satisfying.

Taking your car to a dealer for a routine service or repair is like paying a tax for being lame.
