Strange cuts in V70's tires

Hai,

My tires had some strange cuts in them during my last check-up. They appeared in the cheek of the tires and were diagonal towards the surface of the tires. They didn't run flat as the canvas was still in good shape (well.....)

Is this a common defect typical for the S/V70 due to its extreme turning cycle?

It was a shame as the tires were still in perfect shape (apart from the cuts).

May I ask what a "cheek" of a tire is? (I'm guessing outer edge of the tread) And why would a tire have "canvas", do you mean the condition on the rubber.

What extreme turning "cycle" (circle??) does a V70 have - the one I've been in (new shape) didn't have a particularly tight one... 900 series and 700 series (200 series too) can turn tighter then smaller economy style cars (VW Golf, Toyota Tercel/Corrola) according to carpoint.com - and i've swung my

960 around in some tight spots to prove it, with no tire damage.

Sorry dude, I am not a native and as these descriptions are rather specific I had to litterally translate them from Dutch..... But it seems common sense saved my day

Canvas is the inner fabric to which the rubber is attached......

Same with the S/V70 (classic, that is) but that is rather rare as the S/V70 is front driven and the 700 and 900 series rear driven. I have been told that in order to reach that extreme turning circle, Volvo had to bank (?!?!) the front wheels when they are in the furthest position.

Hence my question......

The cuts were not straight in the outer edge yet along the straight line (if you can still follow me). The cuts must have been 2 to 3 cm deep....... It almost seemed as if something skinned the outer edges of my tires.....

I was just wondering if this is common on the V70 classic (guess not). Perhaps I was cornering to fast in a tight corner...... or have I 'taken the curb' too often...... yet, the cuts appeared evenly distributed along the 'cheeks' of my tires and I would expect taking a curb inflicts sporadic damage.......

Any thoughts?

Right. THe turning circle of a V70 is more like a Ford Crown Victoria but not as bad as a Neon. No fwd car has a tight turning radius like we were used to in the old rwd Volvos. Here is the comparison: FWD: Volvo V70 39' Audi A6 38.3' Saab 9-5 37.1' Dodge Neon SRT-4 41' Subaru Impreza 35.4 Mits. Lancer 37.4 VW Jetta 34.4 New VW Bug 35.8

RWD: Lexus IS300 34.1' Volvo 240 32.2 Volvo 940 32.2 Ford Crown Vic. 40.3

I'm at a loss... Ask the tire specialist for his opionion (maybe it's you alignment - but you're in Europe so isn't that tested at least once a year to meet laws or something)
