Volvo 1987 740 Turbo Gas Hog !!!!!!

I get like 10 miles to the gallon it seems! It wasn't like this a couple years ago. I don't really smell fumes and I don't use the turbo that often. And you know how, they say you usually get more mpg highway than in the city? Well, it seems as if I get better mileage if I don't take the freeway. I can practically watch the fuel guage go down as I drive across town.

Can someone recommend best way to increase mileage? The car was recently smogged and it idles fine I guess, no misfire or hesitation really. Fuel filter maybe?

thanks

Air hoses between the turbo and intake manifold are the usual cause of excessive fuel consumption. Bad air mass meter can do it, or you might have a fuel leak somewhere too. Fuel filter won't increase consumption, if it gets clogged it just won't run right.

Bad Lambda sensor/2 Sensor can affect fuel use to.

Could it be something more basic like binding brakes or slipping transmission or clutch?

Well, I did change the rear brakes a month ago. But I believe it has been like this even before I changed the brakes. That's something to look at too, I guess. thanks.

I had a frozen master cylinder once, when the fluid (and air from slack bleeding) got hot it put the brakes on. Easy to check - just see if it rolls on its own, but try it when brakes are warm.

Update ! Yay ! No more gas hog ! Turns out the TPS Switch on the intake was waaay off and so I pulled the whole thing off the car, (throttle body and switch) and cleaned it thoroughly and reset the TPS to "click". Now it runs with acceleration zip and I have great mileage! It really pays to clean all that gunk out of the throttle body.

thanks again for all the suggestions !
