Which GPS to get?

Question

After I saw my friend's GPS I was hooked. From the reviews it looks like TomTom is the best but I wanted to get some feedback first. They have an on dashboard model & a PDA model. Seems the PDA would be more convenient, versatile & easier to move to another car. Any recommendations? I have a 93

I'll second that. I just got an I5. It holds satellite signals very well. (The Garmin 2620 and Magellan 700 didn't do well, and were constantly resetting the route.) The I5 has batteries for out of the car nav. You can't store routes but setting up a route is so easy if you have saved destinations in your favorites list. The voice, turn by turn, directions are excellent but it doesn't say street names.JIMinFLI

any garmin unit...imho...good in the car, boat, field  or plane...

I have TomTom on a PDA and a friend has a TomTom Go 500 dash mount unit. TomTom is brilliant. If I have a complaingt about it it is only that it will always try to re-route you on to the original route if you go off course whereas my old Garmin GPS V used to recalculate the entire route. Both have their pros and cons though. The TT method makes rerouting very quick compared to recalculating the entire route, but sometimes a recalculated route can be more efficient.

If the Garmin has any advantage at all its in its out of car use. TT is hopeless if you try to use it for navigating away from roads (while out mountain biking for example).

For me I prefer TT over the Garmin though as it is more intuitive, and (on a PDA) you get more than just a SatNav system.
