2001 1.8T hard starting when around freezing

First, the car runs fine. The problem is that it won't start, right away, when it has been sitting in the cold awhile. I have to try to start it, then let it sit for 3-5 mins. It always starts on the third try.

I have replaced the CTS and the fuel pump relay, no effect. Sometimes I can hear the fuel pump run when I open the door, as it should, but not usually, even after sitting overnight. I put a voltmeter on the pump. It reads about 10.8 volts when cranking; sounds like the pump is running when cranking. This seems like a low reading to me. What do you think?

I assume the next step would be to measure the fuel pressure at the engine. But what would normal cranking and running pressure be?

One day I guess I'll have to get into the door switch also.

Another strange problem that may be related, or not: once every coupla weeks or so, when it starts, the computer isn't working. The light is on and there's no response to moving the gas pedal. I shut it off and restart, it's okay.

Have corroded connections been a problem with this model? Could that be making all these symptoms? Why won't it start only when it's cold?

Hope you folks have some good ideas, Joe

That voltage is completely normal when cranking. Don't forget the starter is pulling a lot of power at the same time.

Yes, I believe you're right. The voltage jumps up to 13.6 volts as soon as the engine starts. Thanks for your input.

Clamp> That voltage is completely normal when cranking. Don't forget the starter = is

Clamping the return line from the fuel pressure regulator is next. Not a good thing to do since fuel pressure goes sky high.

Causes

1- ECT 2- VW was doing ECM software flashed for similar issues like yours 3- carbon on intake valves 4- injectors- maybe but unlikely.

Take a scanner to that car and see if you can pull up any faults before you start digging too deep. Cover your basics first.
