99 Passat: Strange Brakelight Issue

The other night I noticed that my brake lights were on all of the time. A few days prior, my wife had told me that the cruise control had stopped working. "Aha!" I thought, "bad brake light switch! And it's keeping the cruise control from engaging."

We took it to our mechanic, who said the brake lights were fine. I figured that it must be an intermittent issue, and it HAD to be the brake light switch, so I told him to go ahead and replace it.

Turns out that didn't fix the problem, and the problem seems a little odd:

During the day, brake lights work properly, cruise control also works properly.

At night (when we turn the lights on), brake lights (including center light) stay on, cruise control stops working.

I suspect it's something simple, once we know what it is. Any thoughts would be GREATLY appreciated.

You were right on, thanks! Turns out that a single-filament bulb will fit! Switched for the dual-filament, and all is well.

Thanks Again!
