trying to tune up in mexico with no specs,

Jan 28, 2005 9 Replies

I have a 93 jetta 2.0Ltr and no manuale and am unable to get one shipped down as of yet and would very much appreciate some help. What please is the plug gap setting/cylinder order and firing order/ignition timming. Also i have bought a new cam timing belt and asociated parts ie water pump tension pully and wish to retard the cam timing gear by one tooth, but dont know if this would be a clockwise or anti clockwise move. sure could use the help from some one, thanks

Plugs should be gapped out of the box, which is about .026"

1-3-4-2 Timing is controled by the ECU-no adjustment- as long as all the marks are correct. retard the cam 1 tooth WHY? 1 tootth is way to much. Most camadjustment fall in the area of +/-8*

Ask these guys:

1-3-4-2 has been the classic firing order for a long time.

When I'm not sure which way the car rotates I put the car in gear and watch the rotor as i pull the car forward a little. In any case evvvvvrybody knows you don't take but one plug wire of at a time as you replace a cap, etc.

You really really need one of these:

but a Haynes will suffice.

Thank yous one and all for your replys. They were most helpfull and I will look farther into changing the cam timing befour altering it. Much appreciated in Mexico

Does you car have a MAF (check if near the airfilter there is an electric plug). 93 is a strange year, but from 94 on, all Jettas and Golfs sold south of the border were Digifant and not Motronic, so any advise gotten here would be at least somewhat incorrect.

I have a 95 Golf and speak spanish.

Yes Eduardo it does have a MAF does that make my vehicle a Digifint or Motronic and the advice given correct or? BTY no spanish please. I am Canadian and though my wife speaks Spanish she is not a very good mechanic. Thanks though for offering :)

ok. MAF makes it Motronic. So your can was bought in Canada and now you are in mexico...

Send me email at the address at the signature and I can try and help a bit more---

Following up with myself. Dont move the cam a tooth. Motronic uses two sources of information to adjust timing automaticaly, and they would dissagree and probably throw a check engine light if the cam is not assembled correctly.

Firing order is 1342, as most cars, and timing is automatic.

thank you Eduardo (mochas gratis)im still getting prepared to do the tune up/ timing belt work. getting supplies is not like up north :( if i ever get your addy figured out maby ill take you up on (the help me out) offer. i hope to have a manual shipped soon to El Paso and then down. thanks to all
