2001 Kia. Intermittant missfires at one coil.

I am working on a 2001 Kia with 2.4 liter engine.

The check engine light (MIL) comes on intermittantly. The code is P0320, "Ignition or Distributor Engine Speed (RPM) circuit malfunction."

When the MIL comes on, the car is running rough on only two cylinders. Unplug the first coil, and the rough running continues undiminished. Unplug only the second coil and the engine dies. This narrows the problem to the first coil.

Swap the two coils, and the problem does not move to the other cylinders. So it is not a problem with the coils, itself.

Sometimes the engine runs well. This problem arrises intermittantly.

Anybody know what could cause this?

Jim S.

How about the spark plugs and cables on the affected cylinders?
