1979 300D Turbo?

Does such a factory-born beast exist?

Some "guru" guy says no, 1981 is earliest 300D Turbo.

True?

The first 300SD Turbodiesels were 1977 models - all of about 55 cars. The 1980 was the last year of the 116 body 300SD, a fine vehicle that I still own. Starting in '81 the 126 body began and used the same engine and transmission through 1985.

Your "guru" ought to talk to his swami to get his story straight.

The 300D 123 body Turbodiesel started in 1981 or 1982 and was sold thru

1985.

You can convert that car into a TD... but not factory... maybe in Europe they might have it earlier...

The "guru" is close. In the U.S. market, the 300 D Turbodiesel sedan (W

123) first came out for the 1982 model year in late 1981. The 300 TD Turbodiesel station wagon had already been available for a while by then.

Jah. First sold as 82's they may have actually been made in 81 according to the VIN plate.

There was a 79 300TD but that's a wagon and non-turbo. Perhaps this is the source of confusion.

Production of pre-series 300D Turbodiesel started in April 1981, serial production in August 1981. Productioon ended in August 1985. That is the sedan.

The T-model - the station wagon - was earlier, production of pre-series 300 TD Turbodiesel started in November 1979, serial production in October 1980, production ended in January 1986.

That is official MB data.
