Hesitation during acceleration problem

I have a 98 Mustang GT & whenever I step on the gas a tad more than needed to barely get the car moving it hesitates a bit... like studders kinda... it goes.. then hesitates & goes.. then hesitates & goes... I bought some electrical parts cleaner & cleaned very carefully the IAT sensor & the MAF and pulled the air filter & cleaned it (CAI)... problem went away slightly, but then came back within a few minutes of driving... so then I replace the fuel filter (gas spewing all over me...bleh.. hate changing the fuel filter) and again it went away a LOT.. almost entirely... but came back within a few minutes of driving.. thought it wouldn't hurt to pull the ground battery cable for 25 mins so I did that... didn't really help.. same thing of went away for a min or 2 & came back. I am sort of leaning towards a dying MAF meter/sensor... what do you guys think? All advice appreciated!

Well, found the problem. I pulled the entire CAI out of my car & cleaned with simple green from MAF down... including the MAF. Normally I'd be careful & use only electrical parts cleaner on the MAF, but at this point I had no care whatsoever if the damn thing died... I was fed up with it. I scrub & scrub the actual tube/pipe... gently clean the MAF sensor.. scrub the tube portion.. and I get lazy & don't clean above the MAF... the rest of the tube.. I put it back in my car... BAM.. problem fixed. I am going to clean the rest of it though just because it's bugging me now that I didn't clean it. It's not hard to get just the MAF-up portion off anyway... but anyway it just needed a good 'ol Simple Green cleanin!

I'd be wondering how it got that dirty to begin with. K&N maybe?

Actually it was kinda dirty when I bought the CAI itself... I didn't even think to clean it though.

next time you change the fuel filter pull the fuse to the fuel pump and let the engine die, this relieves the fuel line pressure so there is no spewing when the fuel filter is changed.

I relieved fuel pressure the first time too & it spewed gas on me just as bad, unfortunately. Thanks for the info though.

Gotcha. I'm always surprised how much better mine runs after I clean just a few input sensors. And no matter what you do, you'll always wind up with a facefull of fuel changing out the fuel filter. I just put goggles on and go for it.

I didn't have goggles... but I learned my lesson last time so I had a towel ready & when a little fuel started coming out I put it over my face & ripped it off. How often are you supposed to change the fuel filter? Haynes says every 30,000 miles or 24 months... but a buddy of mine said every 10,000 miles. I've been changing every 20,000 miles.

I judge how often to change it by blowing into a filter I've pulled off and drained. I've found that most start plugging up at 10,000, and are nearly choked up solid at 20,000. Based on this, my best recommendation would be

15,000 miles.

And I'm sure someone will reply, "I've driven 248,000 miles and have never changed the fuel filter, ever. Money wasted if you ask me!" To those folks I can only say, 'Have a nice day.'

My fuel filters have been pretty bad at 20k miles & I thought about changing it in small increments.. I think I'll go with 15,000 miles next time & see how that goes... not like it's gonna hurt to change it earlier than normal. I can't even imagine changing it at over 20k miles at a time... Lord..
