306 XSi engine cut-out

I have just bought a second hand 306 xsi (2 litre, 16v version). When accelerating, foot hard down, the car suddenly stops accelerating. If I lift the peddle, then gently reapply, the engine will generally kick in again. However, sometimes it just cuts completely and I loose brakes and power steering. I then have to turn the ignition to get it started, which it does no problem. Also, when this problem occurs, the engine idles erractically and cuts-out while idling. These problems are intermittent, the car will sometimes work for a week or two without problems.

What is the problem??

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi could be anything from ECU, coil packs blown up your ECU, need new sparks, vacuum leak from one of the hoses, O2 sensor is knackered, stepper motor or potentiometer blown. Take your pick. I had all of the above symptoms on my 306 XSi 8V and either replaced or checked all of the above myself. It would either cut out from cold or when drving along.

I finally sorted it by replacing the sparks, and putting in Greased Lightning 12,000 mile fuel system treatment and Greased Lightning Instant engine treatment. I've had no problems since I did this. I highly recommend this stuff (check on ebay or google for it).

Clean all air pipes and buy a new Idle control valve.
