GM shifts strategy on brands

- GM shiftsstrategy on brands. I wonder what the heck this is supposed to mean. Another article on GM's strategy shift was at Wall Street Journal today, and no mention of Saab. Not a word.

Saturn is supposed to carry Opel-designed vehicles here in the US.

To me, it sounds like good news to Saab fans. It sounds like they intend to keep Saabs in their own niche, not morphed into a chevy malibu or something. I guess the part about possibly having to discontinue another brand (see oldsmobile) is a bit disheartening, considering Saab has the very lowest unit sales of all GM brands, except hummer, which we know isn't going anywhere. But have faith.

But very few GM brands have the prestige status of Saab, so it balances out IMHO anyway.

Not until the USA government decides to stage another fake war and/or invasion on/of a country which it's decided to no longer support by supplying arms and money as 'aid'. 8-)

Craig.

I recently discovered that Hummer isn't actually manufactured by GM. It is a product of AM General, formerly a division of American Motors Corp. AMC had to sell AM General to a US based company when Renault took over operations. AM General is now owned by The Renco Group (see

GM's only ownership is in the Hummer, H1 and H2 names/trademarks and the rights to distribute and market the civilian vehicles. Military vehicles are still called Humvee and are manufactured and sold by AM General without involvement from GM.

Isn't the H2 a hummer body slapped on a Chevy Suburban frame?

I bet you could go out an get a Suburban this weekend for under $30,000 :-) They can't give them away. Some dealer is advertising Tahoes and Suburbans starting at $19,999 - sure I believe that . . .

The H3 is available with a manual transmission. This might be worth while taking out for a test drive.

That's surprising, though I'm not sure why on earth I'd want to rumble around in a huge lumbering truck all the time, it's bad enough when I have to drive a pickup to haul something.

The H3 is closer to a small SUV, with matching gas mileage. Yes, I do love my Classic 900, but it is not suitable for Boy Scout camping expeditions. Mine has a lowered suspension, so it would get stuck rather quickly in the fields. I could buy a Saab 9-7 for this purpose, but why pay a premium for a Saab nameplate on a Trailblazer.

There is a little more to it then that, but.. yeah.

H2 is built on the same "platform" as the GM 3/4 ton trucks. H3 is built on the same "platform" as the GM platform used by the Chevy Colorado.

Its like the way the Saab 9-3, Chevy Malibu Max, and Pontiac G6 being built on the same GM/Opal platform.
