Hi, Can anyone tell me if the Subaru Head unit (6 disc in dash changer) standard on a WRX 04 wagon sends full range of signal to the front door speakers or just the base to the speakers and the treble to the tweeters?
I'm going to replace my door speakers and my buddy who's helping me ('cos I'm new to doing this stuff) wants to know this so we can determine whether we need to hook up the crossover or not if we are keeping the head unit.
Any help much appreciated.

I had my main door speakers replaced with better ones awhile ago (02 model, not 04), and I was pretty sure that the shop told me that the little door tweeters were connected by the same lead off the head unit
- simple split, no crossover. I expect the little ones just push out the high end more because they're so small.

Unless Subaru has made major changes since the '02 model (and somehow I doubt it), the tweeter crossover is a tiny little capacitor glued to the tweeter. You can visually check for this easily enough. As such, both tweeter and woofer leads in the door carry the full signal. Be extremely careful with the install of the front door woofers. The OEM speaker is very shallow, and most component woofers will require at least a 1/2 inch spacer to keep the door glass from hitting the magnet when down. Much more than 1/2 spacer inch may put the speaker cone into the door trim . . . and this is real hard to see once the plastic panel is replaced. Measure twice; cut once. FWIW, the OEM speakers are crap; you will enjoy a vast improvement in sound quality from almost anything you cram in there. Feel free to contact me directly if you need more nfo on this project.
