1996 Cadillac Deville Parking brake won't release:

Hi a buddy brought me his 1996 Deville since the parking brake will not release when placed in gear as it is designed to do. In order to release the parking brake, you need to pull the manual release just above the parking brake lever. The shift brake interlock and brake lights operate normally, is there a fuse that I have overlooked? Thanks,

Bush

It is a vacuum release and has no fuses. Finding one that isnt broken seems to be a better trick than finding one that is....

Pull the vacuum hose off the vacuum motor and have someone place the gear selector in drive with their foot planted firmly on the regular brake to see if you have vacuum present. If vacuum is present the vacuum motor is dead and if vacuum is not present then you have a problem with the actuating switch.

Try spraying some WD40 on the under-dash mechanism and see if that helps. Worked for me for a while then I used Breakfree CLP and that really did the deed for good.
