'86 22re no power/stalls

hi folks, i'm trying to help my brother in N.C. he can't work if he doesn't get this truck running . i'm in N.Y. trying to help him by phone. well here goes. the engine has 125k on it but always ran fine. starts up o/k , idles o/k has no power on accel. to keep it from stalling or to help it get going one must pump and feather the gas to help it along.

  • did fuel pump
  • new fuel filters
  • carburator reman. 1.5 yrs ago
  • checked for vacuum leak ( engine stalls quickly when carb. is covered with rag )
  • messed with timing to see if it made a difference. no change really
  • sometimes a small backfire can occur when trying to pump and feather gas ?
  • it sounds like it could be a carb. problem but i'm trying to give him other things to check before purchasing another one ?

any help would be greatly appreciated

Could be the head gasket, but that is pretty low miles for a head gasket.

Signs of a blown headgasket.

Oil in the radiator (brown bits floating in the coolant) Water in the oil pan (turns the oil to mayonaise) Oil in the cylinders (burnt oily smoke in exhaust) Water in the cylinders (big white clouds from tailpipe)

Headgaskets blow when the engine gets too hot usually because of a slow coolant leak of some kind.

How's the cat? I've seen cat converters melt down and plug up.

Hey thanks for the info guys, as of 10:00 this morn. he is down at the local auto parts buying the pcv valve , another set of plugs , some techron fuel additive etc.. he will be checking the pcv soon . if thats checks o/k then it's on to the cat . as far as the possible head gasket failure there is no water in the oil, no white smoke out the tail, that all seems to be fine.

Any thing else ring a bell let me know . I will let you know on my end how it's going. He's working on it outside in his driveway and says it's quite cold in Boone N.C. ( MOUNTAINOUS REGION ) today. thanks again

Had the same exact problem on my 86' 22R. Revved up fine in park, but when put in to drive it started knocking like a diesel at speeds above 35mph. I thought it was the transmission, it's an Automatic, BTW. Someone suggested replacing the CAT after it barely passed SMOG. Worked like a charm until one of the chain guides broke and had to rebuild the entire timing assembly.
