Easiest way to tune an audi a4 1.8t 1996mod ?

What would be the easiest, cheapest or safest way to tune this car? Am thinking about chipping it or upping the turbo pressure, which way is the best? Have heard that upping the turbo pressure will give it 180bhp which is the same as the new 1.8t engines. And it should'nt put any more strain on the engine than it does on the new engines.

Chipping basically increases the turbo pressure, so it's kind of the same thing. Chipping means changing the engine software - fuel mapping, boost, etc. Just upping the turbo pressure alone would not be adviseable because it will lead to lean condition (engine will be starved for fuel) which is not good. That's why you should purchase a chip from a name-brand tuner that knows exactly what they're doing.

There are other subtle differences between the newer and older 1.8T engines such as VVT (variable valve timing), compression ratio, updated turbo internals, etc. But yeah, squeezing 180hp out of that engine should not put a very excessive strain on it, but then again - it all depends on how you drive it and how well you take care of the turbo (proper warm-up and cool-down procedures, synthetic oil).
