iDrive issue

Hey all. New BMW owner here. My iDrive has frozen twice in the last two months during a navigation input while driving. The car is a '07 650i coupe. My question: Is there a soft-boot or restart for the iDrive system that you can do while driving? When it freezes it locks up the radio/CD, nav, bluetooth... everything. The only way I've got it to reset is to park and shut off the car for 10 minutes or more.

Have you tried calling Microsoft Support? :-)

Good idea, but I'll have to wait until 10pm. Microsoft vaporware support is located in Sri Lanka. :^)

It shouldn't do that. Bring it back to the dealer and have them check, diagnose and fix it. You're still under warranty.

Don't know if this works on the 6 series but it does on the 7 series. Add up all the numbers in the VIN code and press the odometer reset button on the speedo that number of times. You should get a display covering the middle portion of both rev counter and speedo.

Choose your reset item with the reset button and reset it.

If it an auto your car also remembers your driving style and eventually fill the g/box memory with crap - like continually starting off in 2nd and shifting up too early. Sometimes this can induce a "flat spot".

Try this.

Enter car and close the door put key or thingy into the slot and turn ign on -DO NOT START ENGINE - DO NOT PUT FOOT ON BRAKE.

Turn key as if to start engine or press START button and put foot on accelerator pedal for a full 25 seconds. right to the floor and press kickdown switch if it's auto and leave it on the floor.

After the 25 sec remove foot and with key on the off position (or press start again) Key OFF do NOT remove. Wait a full 2 mins.

During this time the ECU will reset itself. WITHOUT removing the key start the car and go for a test drive.

You should see/feel a definite improvement in performance and gear changes - you might also find an increase in fuel consumption due to you new found performance but the overall effect will be noticeable and you'll like it.

This works on most BMW cars 3, 4, 5, 6, & 7 series (don't know about the 1) and will probably also work for the X3 & X5.

I would say anything from about 2001 onward.

If you want to reset the service indicators it is also very easy - This might also reset the iDrive too.

Switch ign on DO NOT START ENGINE (put key in and turn or insert fob thingy)

Press odometer trip reset button until warning triangle appears in window on instrument nacelle.

Release the odometer button momentary and press again.

KEEPING THE BUTTON PRESSED scroll through the reset options

To reset a selected item keep pressing the button on the option until the word RESET appears in the window

RELEASE the button and press again until the new date (for service lights) appears.

If you hold the button for too long against a service reset you don't want to reset simply release button for 25 seconds and switch off ign - start again.

If you do not release and press the button quick enough for the vehicle to recognize it you may get a message in German - simply turn off ign - wait 30 secs and start again.

No responsibility accepted for you screwing up.

After carefully reading your suggestions I'm torn between hysterical laughter and running away while screaming.

Your suggestions make three hours in the BMW service dept. look reasonable.

I think you might get more enjoyment if you just set the car on fire.

So why are you so cynical - try it and if it don't work on the 6 then it is I said but it does work on the 7 and that is what I was told and actually saw the "mechanic" write the NUMBERS and add them up and press the knob and all the bells and whistles glowed on the dash speedo and rev counter.
