My 2000 Chevy 1500 Silverado Z71(106000 miles) got stuck in 4x4HI. I tried a new switch in the dash with no success. I have been reading on this site and some others that most likely the encoder motor has to be replaced. I have tried the battery cable removal, the Tran fuse removal, had a OBDII unit hooked to the truck with no codes. Have not tried lifting the vehicles off the ground and try to switch to 2x4. When was the encoder updated? Did GM find a solution for the problem? Is it hard to replace the encoder motor?
