The info in this story concerning the most recalls is misleading and/or incomplete. Does GM have the most gross number of recalls, or the most vehicles being recalled, and are all of these actually "recalls" or are they adding in the overall number of notices and advisories that don't really require action but that GM is just notifying owners for informational purposes?

After all, they are the largest auto manufacturer in the world and the possibility exists that a single recall from GM could affect more vehicles than the total production of one of the smaller manufacturers for a year.

Also missing in this story - how many accidents, injuries and/or deaths were caused by this defect? Since that would be big news and it's not mentioned in the story, then my guess is that this recall was initiated based on customer complaints and not based on actual incidents. Sounds like a programming issue with the ABS computer that most likely will require a reflash of the software.

If you don't like Chevy, then may I suggest going with either the Hyundai Sonata or the Land Rover LR3. After all, their problems were only small items like seatbelts that might release in an accident or defective fuel tanks, respectively.

Cheers - Jonathan

If you find a vehicle that doesn't have problems or recalls, let us know.

As for me, my '78 Suburban that I had for 14 years, and my '92 Chevy PU that I had for 13 years had minimal problems, so I recently purchased an '05 Chevy crew cab. No problems so far. I had a '90 Honda Accord, several recalls (transmission, seatbelts), failed "igniter" left me stranded, a recall that Honda did only when customer had problems, maintenance at Honda dealer expensive. I have an '02 Toyota Sienna, tranny leak at 20K (however, I dispute that because I had no signs of stain on the driveway from a leak; I suspect the dealer was ripping off Toyota's warranty) warped rotors at 30K, (dealer charged so much for "brake job" that I essentially paid for rotors), bad O2 sensor at 49K (dealer wanted another $500 to replace manifold, claiming sensor was "siezed"; I stopped work and had gas station mechanic replace sensor). Paid way too much for both Honda and Toyota (but that was the best "deal" I could get), got a teriffic deal on '05 Chevy even before employee discount.

I'll stick with Chevys until my luck with them runs out.

Man, sorry to hear about your 03' Silverado. You must have bought a bad one. I have an 03' and I have not had a problem. And the only recall was to replace the tailgate cables. This is my first Chevy, and so far so good. Every car company has a lemon or two.

We used the Astro vans with the 4.3 V6 for many years on the flight line where I work. Pretty tough duty for a vehicle and they held up very well. My son is looking for a van and I advised him to get a used Astro. And I don't do that lightly, as Dad will usually end up working on the boys' vehicles.

Flight line duty huh, thats pretty high praise for the astro, one I been looking at is a 96 astro with 144 K miles, still seems pretty clean, no major damage that I have seen on the body, had water pump and alt, and ac comp replaced, got to find time to test it out myself, if I ever can, its priced right as far as NADA goes. I do copier service work, and a astro would fil the bill, and stil haul the boat, when wife has the Envoy.

The only real weak point in the vehicle are the two idler arms in the steering system. They wear out, but are easy to change with common hand tools, short of the required alignment afterwards. It rides like a truck. This is a van, not an over sized station wagon masquerading as a van. The 4.3 is rock solid if it has had any kind of decent maintenance as is the tranny and should give another 100k if its taken care of. Watch the axle seals. These things handle loads well, the suspension is more than adequate for the loads it is designed to haul. Its geared well to pull loads, how ever that means its not geared so well for fuel mileage. With a light foot they do good. With a heavy foot, they will drink.

There are three Astro's in our driveway. One has 203k, one has 149K, one with 110K. All have the 4.3L engine. I drive one for work, and Mom has one for her daily driver. Overall great vehicles. They break from time to time, but I would not hesitate to buy another one. Too bad they discontinued them.
