Help! upper rad. hose blew off 96 Astro Van

Mar 26, 2005 4 Replies

Wife pulled into driveway said the check gauges light came on and temp red lined. Upper radiator hose blown loose. I flushed the system and changed the thermostat. Put in new fluid. Just idling in driveway temperature still keeps climbing, no heat out of heater, heater hoses cold. and upper radiator hose only gets luke warm even when temp gauge is way up. Like thermostat isn't opening? New thermostat. Would appreciate any advice Thanks, Jack

Thermostat backwards? Bad pump?

Check if the belt that turns the water pump is still there. Check the thermostat by placing it in boiling water -- valve should open.

Did you put the thermostat in backwards? Did you buy on from the dealer or did you opt for an el-cheapo replacement (they are never worth the money)? Did the new one have a piddle valve (or a bleeder hole)? The lack of either can cause this. It did on my farm tractor What I did was to drill a 1/8" hole and problem was solved. There is no other replacement I can find that fits (physically) so I had to modify it.
