starter shimming

I replaced the starter on my 90 GMC (350 cid / auto trans) but didn't have time to check the clearance. It's starting fine and running with no new noises (i.e. flywheel grinding or something)... should I yank the inspecting cover to check the clearance? What problems could improper clearance cause? Chipped flywheel tooth?

Thanks in advance, Tom

If its too tight the bendix will not return and your starter will stay engaged. If its too loose the teeth may break off. If it didn't have a shim chances are it wont need one.

It had shims with it (it's a reman) and a little rod to check the clearance.... I just ran out of time.

I may try to check it this weekend.

Thanks, Tom

I meant the original starter that you took out. If it didn't have a shim it won't need one.

Oh. The guys at AutoZone implied that since the reman process may have required machining on the mounting face a shim may be necessary.

I still haven't gotten around to checking it!
