Test starter

Is there a way to see if a starter is going bad before it goes out? Maybe with a multimeter? Starting is slow. Maybe low batteries or alternator not charging them enough. Leaning more towards the alternator, but want to be able to test the starter too. TIA.

measure battery VOLTAGE ................AT THE STARTER TERMINAL and at the battery, while cranking

look for any signifigant drap between the two

also measure from battery nagtive to engine block while cranking..........anything over 0.1 V is too much drop

you should have 13.8-14.8 V at battery terminals with engine running

have a load test done on the battery ny someone with a carbon-pile load, to see if it can produce the amps necessary for the starter
