Cool site!
Fuel consumption isn't by far the major cost of a car. In Europe fuel prices are about 3 times higher then in the US and even here the it is at most 20% of the costs. Now 20% is a big number by itself, but if the mileage of 2 cars are 10% off, the real difference is 2% of the costs. The valued decrease of the car is the biggest loss. Then insurance, taxes, repairs and fuelconsumption begin to matter. I'm not saying you should buy a SUV and drive it in 2nd gear on interstates because the mileage doesn't matter but if you have 2 almost simular cars and one is $1000 cheaper, the better mileage of the other will never compensate.
Just my 2 Eurocents (15% more expensive then US ones). Martin
P.S. before I start an environmental issue here: I go to work on a bike every day which is 8 miles a day. Not enough to get a Nobel price for, I guess, but that really saves fuel. :)
