Your starter for ten!!!

What year were the last mass produced cars with starting handles made in the U.K. and what were they? Just something we have been puzzling over at work.

My 1961 Ford Anglia had a starting handle fitted as standard, The radiator had a purpose built hole in it made for the handle to pass through in order to fit the cranking slot.

Land Rover also provide a starting handle and so does Lada.

Other than Land Rovers, I'd suggest the Austin-Morris models that were dropped by BL in the early '70's, the Morris Minor and A60 (Cambridge / Oxford).

Made in the UK? Or sold in the UK?

If "sold in", then definitely into the 90s. If "made in", then probably the

60s, mebbe before that.

My 1970 Morris oxford and 1965 Austin Cambridge have starting handles and very useful they are even when setting the vavles and points not to mention starting, a few years ago my battery failed outside the local Mc Donalds (one of the fewtimes tounch wood!) a couple of swings and it was away again much to the amusement of the customers in there that came to the window to watch this nutter wind his old car up!!

I think Morris minors/oxfords and land rovers were the last mass produced cars to have starting handles. Regards George

I'd say it would be one of those Eastern block cars from the '70-'80s - Skoda etc.

To open the bidding my ZB Varitone Magnette (1958) had one. I'm sure there were many later, though.

Not standard, but I recall an aftermarket kit to fit a starting handle to a Mini (came out somewhere around the front wheel).

Vauxhall viva vans had them quite late about 82 I think, hillman imps up to

76 ? land rover up to about 80 as range rover. The last car I used a handle on almost every day was my first regular road car, an austin A40, a turn or two would always start it, even in deep snow, after the first start of the day the battery would do any warm starts. A60 cambridge I cranked a few times.

Last Series Landrovers dissapeared about 1983, the 2.25 had a starting handle.

I'd have thought the Hindustan Ambassador still comes with one.

Early 3.5V8 Range Rovers had 'em. (late 60's / early 70's) - I remember rebuilding a low compression V8 and fitting 10.5:1 pistons and heads. That took some cranking by hand! And as somebody mentioned earlier, Lada Nivas had them in the mid 80's although they don't count (in the context of the OP).

The Citroen 2CV6 was produced with a starting handle up until the last one

1990/1991. Steve the grease

Not quite. The Imps had the hole for a starting handle, but wasn't fitted with the dog on the crankshaft for the handle to engage. The Imp van (can't really remember - was it the Commer Cob?) on the other hand, was fitted with the crankshaft dog and provided with a handle. If you wanted to use a starting handle on the car though, you had to fit the van bits. Or use a socket, a long extension and a ratchet handle, as I did once. You do some mad things when you are young! :-)

When were Skoda's etc. MADE in the UK ?!...

Last car designed to have a starting handle as an option was the Hillman Imp --- you had to buy the dog that fitted the end of the crank as an "extra". The last ones to have it as standard were Morris Minor, Morris Oxford the pre 67 Rootes Minx range and Humbers , and The Ford Anglia 105e

Good grief. ;-) There's so much friction on this engine that turning it with a socket on the crank pulley bolt is still an effort.

I worked regularly a 2CV Charleston in the mid 80 and it didn't have a dog

Then it had been butchered, or you never took the fan off to do the points, alternator belt or clean the oil cooler.

There's a starter dog on the fan of all 2-pot A-series Citroens, right up until the very last - also the GSA until it was discontinued in '86. The starting handle doubles as the jack handle and (useless) wheelbrace.

Yes, but was this a UK produced car (the original question)

For a few years in the 50s, yes....

More recently, no, which is why I asked if the OP meant UK-made or UK- available a couple of days ago, then didn't raise the subject of the 2cv again - Steve did....
