2.8 starting problems

My problem is that I have a 87 firebird that starts but then dies. I checked the fuel presure at the fuel rail and it maintains 35 to 44 psi depending on wether or not it is being cranked over. I checked the oil sending unit and all other components (electrical) that I know of with no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Will it crank right over again and repeat this cycle? Can you duplicate this problem all the time?

Yes it will crank over everytime.

I turn the key and it starts, it fires and runs for about 2 seconds then dies. I tried to start again and it just turns over and over with out starting. (checked and still have spark to the plug)

I let it sit for a couple of minutes and it starts , runs for 2 seconds and dies again. It maintains atleast 40psi at the fuel rail all the time unless I am cranking it over and then it will drop to 37psi - 38psi.

Mass air flow sensors were common failure items on these vehicles. Try cleaning the inside hotwire CAREFULLY with electronics spray. Take note if you find any fuzzy dust in there. That is probably from a shitty quality air filter. It will insulate the hot wire and cause a boatload of problems.

Thinking that and/or a dirty throttle plate, and as we have talked about a

100 times in here, it creates lots of hard to start, and rough idle issues...

It's Alive!!! I cleaned the Mass Air Flow sensor and it started but ran rough. I also replaced the fuel filter, Cap and roter, plugs and wires and cleaned the throttle body! She started right up! My Firebird V-6 powered Suzuki Samurai is back on the road!

Thank you all for your help!

Why did you go with the 2.8 instead of the 4.3? I know Zuki's are pretty good on trails, I also have had to pull a few out of situations where they just didn't have the power. Even a converted one.

A 4.3 in a Zuki is akin to a 454 in a Jeep. Charles I go off roading with some Zuki Owners.

I was looking for a donor vehicle when a friend told me he was selling his firebird for $200.00 with the rebuilt 700R4 out of a blazer. plus I sold the tires and wheels for $200.00 and still parting out the rest of the firebird, so I am doing well. I have done everything for the lift and the V-6 conversion by my self with the exception of having my drive shafts shortened/lengthened. I hang out with a Jeep club here in Hawaii. Go NAVY!!!
