starting problem

I having this fun little problem with my '78 westy. When I try to start it, it will fire then die, if I try again the same thing will happen. After two times that's it, it will only turn over. Any ideas? I'm thinking it is a fuel injection problem. I tested for power and everything has power that should. When I pull the injector and turn over the engine with all cables and hoses connect no gas shoots out. should it? Does this mean anything or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Thanks, Jim

Yes, gas should shoot out, IF.....the fuel pump is running and IF......there is spark to trigger the control unit.

Check the spark first; that's easy. And see that the points have the correct gap (approx.)- should be .016" Inspect the inside of the cap for obvious signs of damage.

If that's OK, have a helper crank the engine while you feel the fuel pump to see if it runs. It is located under the left frame rail, in back.

You could also put a fuel pressure gauge on the test port on the left side of engine. Should read ~35 psi while cranking.

Last, put a voltmeter on the ballast resistor pack (4 ceramic tubes on the engine firewall). Should read 12V while cranking AND when key is released to the ON position.

There is more about the controls on my web site, but those are the first things I would do.
