I have a 1996 Firebird 3.8L that has had several instances where the service code indicates a bad EGR valve or EGR sensor (forgive terminology mistakes, please). I've replaced the EGR valve once and the problem has returned. Checking the spring and obvious visuals, I see nothing wrong with the new one (2-3 months). Is there another module or another problem that could be causing this? I also have a coolant smell as though the overflow is just venting but no real loss of fluid nor over heating. I was thinking maybe the catalytic converter was getting plugged and causing some sort of back-pressure but that's just a wild guess. Any suggestions or experiences?

Bring the car to Autozone, have them scan for codes( they do it free), jot that code and description down and bring that back here.
