AC recharge 01 sport

Is it safe to use a "kit" ( ala Wal-Mart)to recharge my A/C. What should I be careful of? Can I hurt the system by overcharging? Thanks Brandon

If your system uses R-12, it's expensive and you can't buy the stuff without being certified. You can buy the newer R-134a yourself, but you would need to convert your old R-12 system to 134a. Oh, by the way, you can't just dump the old R-12, it needs to be captured. Yes, you can overfill the system, that's why the pros use pressure gauges.

He said it's an 01 model, so definitely not R-12. But why does it need a recharge at all? My '98 is still doing fine. I would claim that where there is a need for a recharge there is a leak, and advise to go to someone with a good sniffer for diagnosis. The days of 'just emptying a can into the system' are over. You may be able to find someone who will do it for a song. My radiator/AC guy is like that - it takes just minutes anyway. He knows that I will come to him to buy parts, to evacuate and refill the system or whatever, and is nice to repeat customers.
