Need opionion for issues with 96 explorer

Greetings,

A friend of mine has a 96 explorer 2x4, 4.0L engine. It has 98,000 miles on it. It is having some problems, and I'm looking for some advice.

Problem 1: The check engine light is on. We took it to autozone, and in had 2 codes : EGR flow excessive, and EGR flow below spec. Any thoughts on what might be causing this? He'll probably take this in to get it diagnosed, but we'd like to know what to expect to be broken.

Problem 2: It is occasionally putting out a loud screeching noise from the front end when it is going about 35 mph or at stoplights. It isn't the fan clutch (wrong noise). We turned on the AC today, and the compressor was cycling on and off (it was about 40 degrees F outside). One time when it cycled off, it did make the noise. Is there anything in the AC clutch that could break and make a noise like that? It seems to do it more in the morning than in the afternoon for some reason. It is garaged at night. Currently I have unplugged the AC clutch as an attempt to diagnose the problem. One clue is that when it was happening one time, he parked it, and the engine died before he could get the hood lifted.

Thanks for any thoughts or ideas on these.

DPFE is the usual fix for the EGR problem.... I prefer to spend a few minutes being sure of it, though (things like this can bite back, sometimes).

Any time that air from the heater blows against glass, the AC compressor will cycle no matter what the temp is set at. Your symptoms are way too vague to make any accurate SWAGs. If the belt is getting old, you might opt for a new one..... when you get the old one off, spin all the pulleys by hand to see if any are rough/noisey.

I had the same noise and it finally got to be all the time.

It was the AC compressor bearing and the compressor runs also when the defrost is set.

Try unplugging the two wire harness going to the AC compressor for a while and see if the noise stops.
