F150 Front Axle/CV Joint Grease Recommendation?

Can anyone recommend anything specific for greasing the CV joints on the front axle? I was hoping to find something in a 14 oz. tube I could pick up at an auto store. I want to get in the habit of greasing the front axle points at each oil change. Ford specifies thier XG-5 CV Joint Grease on the inboard CVs, not sure about the outboards. Any equivelents out there off the shelf? Valvoline Durablend?

Thanks, Matt

"Lucas Red "N" Tacky Multi-Purpose EP Grease is a smooth, tacky, red lithium 12-HO grease fortified with a high degree of extreme pressure additives that give a true Timken load much higher than other greases of this type. It stays in U-joints and resists wash-out, making it the perfect truck grease."

Exactly how do you plan to grease the CV joints? Are you going to remove the clamps on the boots? If the boots are in good shape, regreasing is not necessary - at least not till you have significant mileage on the vehicle. I never touched the CV joints on either of my Ford Expeditions (one was traded at 149,000 miles, the other now has 82,0000 miles). For cars, I've only ever regrease CV joints once - that was for a 11 year old Fiesta with 130,000 miles. The boots had never failed, but given the age ad mileage of the vehicle I decided to clean and regrease the joints. It was a waste of time. The grease inside was still fresh and plentiful. On the other hand I have had to clean and regrease CV joints after a boot failure.

I was told by another truck owner that there were grease points on the front axle of my '04 F-150 4x4, near the inboard and outboard CV joints. Maybe they were referring to something else? I probably have to get my own zerk fittings if I can find the points. Approaching 10k on the new truck, I had the dealer do the 5000 service "yeah yeah yeah we'll grease the front end right" and then they shorted me on the crankcase oil (I think I'll do my own maintenance now!). Couldn't find a quickie haynes or chiltons yet.

Thanks!

From the horses mouth, as it were.....04 half tons have NO grease points.... qualification, some older half tons were sold as "04 heritage" half toms... i.e. 03 style sold as 04s. I haven't seen one and I can't understand anyone buying one...

97 to 03 half tons have two grease points.... both on the idler arm... any decent quality chassis grease will work just fine.....

It constantly amazes me (both here and in other venues), that there are those that will get anal about one thing - to the exclusion of other things that matter just as much, if not more...

Thanks for clarifying that for me. Now I can move on. Just wanted to make sure that if there was something I could do to take better care of this vehicle that I was doing it.

Well, after the tire rotation and oil change, what's left at 10k? I need something to obsess over...

Go into abject denial... refuse to succumb to manic urges and simply enjoy the piss out of your ride.... while performing regularly scheduled services and timely repairs, of course....

Hey Jim Bought one of the Heritages for mywife. A left over 03 retitled as an 04. My wife didn't like the looks of the 04 so we went with the Heritage. My wife is happy so I am happy.
