I have a 1981 F 150 with good alternator, new voltage regulator and still it isn't charging the battery. Anyone with any ideas.

and you are certain the alternator is good because ___________
and you are cetain the 'new' regulator is functioning because _________
I've had this problem before. Take a length of wire (jumper) and momentarily connect the field terminal on the alternator to the positive side of the battery. Flashing the field should bring things back to life. Good luck.

hmmmmmmmmm.
snot.
my thoughts exactly

i have had the alternator tested and i have purchased a new regulator which was grounded prior to connection
also there are the three connections on the back of the alternator and the one marked str is not connected to anything and i cant figure out where it goes.
An intact wire harness would definately help you. The noted terminal should connect to the corresponding terminal on the regulator. If you do decide to flash the field, do it with the engine running and watch for a rise in output voltage.
DC
well there you are
that's the lead to the stator winding, and it needs to be hooked up
It went out with generators
Generators carry residual magnetism in the field coil area, which would lead to reversed-polarity output if not polarized ('flashed') first
in an alternator, the field is the output winding, not the excitation winding, so no such problem exists
Fine, next time you have an alt/reg that wont put out, don't flash the field. Just keep swapping out parts over and over till you fix it. I've had to do it twice in the last two years after buying new alternators and regulators. It has not gone out with generators.
later..
my, my, touchy, touchy
learn to read, I'm not the one changing parts out
Not sure if this is the right forum for this but, I figure someone here would know...
How does Ford X Plan pricing compare to pricing from carsdirect.com?

I used X-plan pricing to buy my Super Duty back in 01 (it's an 02 model) and got a really good deal on it. If memory serves, X-plan gets you something like 3% over dealer's actual cost from Ford. Not the price they say they paid, but the actual cost.
Do some homework on dealer holdback and toss that into your price negotiations and you should do ok. I beat up my sales guy for WEEKS before he finally relented and gave me most of the holdback money. It helps to have financing in place before you visit the dealer as well.
I had a letter from my bank saying I was approved for a loan well over the purchase price of the truck and that helped negotiations quite a bit.
