Engine degreaser?

I replaced a leaking valve cover gasket and I also intend to replace the pushrod cover gasket. (300cid/6cyl) Over the life of this engine(27yr) a build-up of oil/grime/junk has accumulated. I used to pressure wash it occasionally, but.....I slacked off some. Any recommendations for a strong degreaser that will loosen/melt this gunk? I have a pressure washer/1700psi...cold water only. A steamer would be good, but, no got! BTW: valve train is black, but not a hint of sludge/junk. Thanks

I would not use 1700psi to clean an engine, even on the outside. There is too much chance of blowing something loose or forcing water inside a part, connector etc which will corrode. I have been using a product called Super Clean which comes in a standard spray bottle and works really well. Then wash off with low pressure water.

FLOW-AWAY from Kano Labs works very well. If you are careful you can use kerosene.

Is that a product from Castrol? If so, I used to use that and it's very good, but I can't find it anymore.....thanks

I'll look for F-W. Kerosene...back in the day, I used that all the time, but I think I've had enough of that odor now...lol Paint thinner is pretty-much the same formula, but then again the odor 'lingers'...thanks

The purple degreaser that can be found under various names at most auto parts stores isn't too bad. Spray it on full strength and let it sit a while. Caution: don't do it over any surface (i.e. that new concrete driveway) you don't want to mess up..

Actually its available at Wal-Mart (look in automotive around the other degreasers) for about $5 a gallon in the concentrated form. I use it to clean the grease out of my clothes after I have been working on a vehicle around the house.. It works GREAT.. Especially if you let it sit a while..

I found a spray by Autocrafters for $1/can. Bought one whole can.....Gunk brand was $3....and followed the instuctions. Hosed the engine down after the waiting period and VOILA! All the nasty gone! I was/still am amazed! I'll buy anothe can!!

The Gunk brand was expensive to begin with, but what puzzled me was the method used. The stuff was a gel and the engine had to be stone-cold. That's as far as I got reading the instructions. I'm sure it's good, but my dollar was well spent.

As an added bonus, the off-fall cleaned my driveway too! What great stuff! lol
