Unusually noisy underhood

94 Blazer S-10 version, V6 4.3L Vortec engine, AT. 183K miles. 22 mpg average, no oil use or exhaust smoke to speak of.

Since buying this vehicle 2 months ago, spent alot of time and money fixing stuff that simply worn out. Two things that seem related. The underhood noise seems to be related to the serpentine belt in the AC compressor area, suspect the compressor. But, when I replaced the power steering pump, the belt tensioner broke providing inadequate tension. The AC compressor was turning though without the whining noise. So, the jury is still out on this one. A related item I noted looking under the left wheel well at the harmonic balancer. It seems that some of the material has worked it way towards the front of the engine. Giving an awkward appearance while the engine is running.

Should I replace the harmonic balancer? How do I track down this underhood noise to its defacto source, not surmising its source as best guess?

Keep tinkering.. A second person in invaluable if the noise is intermittent..

Not intermittent, its there all the time. When the belt tensioner broke was the only time there was a change, no noise to speak of. During this event, I could see all the pulleys turning, the belt whining a bit intermittently due to lack of tension. The noise I speak of disappeared at that time.

This for those who post to this newsgroup that have unusual underhood noises and are enamored with Toyotas, Hyundais, etc.

Would the noise come from a unlubricated rotating mouse or gerbil cage?

If the car is a toyota, does the car have a rice canister?

If the car is a toyota, does the car have a muffler bearings?

Can you imagine if the US Department of Defense got hard up and published bids for toyota staff cars?

Can you imagine if the White House got hard up and published bids for toyota limos?

Can you imagine if Brinks got hard up and published bids for toyota armored cars?

Can you imagine if trucking industry got hard up and published bids for toyota Class 7 & 8 Trucks with Luberfiner rice oil filters?

What do you do with a rice burner that have soft camshafts that have a useful life of 20,000 miles?

That would lead you to believe it's coming from:

a) alternator b) water pump c) AC compressor d) belt tensioner pulley e) power steering pump f) something else too scary to think about

To be honest, I'd say the best solution to your problem is to get someone who knows the noises cars make to look/listen.. Hard to listen on usenet ;)

"To be honest, I'd say the best solution to your problem is to get someone" else to sit behind the steering wheel "who knows the noises cars make to look/listen." "Hard to listen on usenet"

Maybe the vehicle is hungry for Rice A Roni!
